H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds"

Martian Tripod  /  Tripode marsien 

This model is a 3-D representation of the Martian fighting machine imagined by H.G. Wells in his 1898 novel ‘The War of the Worlds’, and illustrated by Alvim Corrêa in the French language 1906 De Luxe edition of the novel.  Although there have been, before and after 1906, many other illustrations or rendering of the Martian fighting machine, Corrêa’s vision was very close to Wells’ heart.  Both men knew each-other and the last illustration of the De Luxe book depicts both Corrêa and Wells, who once said of the illustrator that he “contributed more to this work with his brush than I did with my pen.”

Alvim Corrêa’s illustrations of the Martian machines do show some differences from one drawing to the other.  RetrokiT’s Tripod has features taken from several illustrations, and offer the modeller with a number of choices to 'personalise' his/her own Tripod.  

We have designed this kit in N-gauge scale (1/160), which will allow modellers to take advantage of a vast array of railway modelling accessories, our Tripod will not really feel out of scale in slightly larger (1/144) or smaller surroundings; after all, Wells never described his Tripod in a great deal of details and all we will ever know of his Tripod height was that itwas ‘nearly a hundred feet high’.  This gives our kit a height of about 20cm.  The kit will also feature a number of original 'Earthly' 1/160 accessories, including a base to allow for the making of a whole diorama 'out of the box'.

Ce modele est une representation en trois dimensions de la machine de guerre marsienne (l’orthographe est d’époque!) telle qu’imaginee par H.. Wells dans son roman ‘La Guerre des Mondes’ et illustree par Alvim Corrêa en 1906 dans l’edition de luxe en langue française du roman.  Bien qu’il y ait eu avant et apres 1906 de nombreuses representations de ces machines de guerre marsiennes, c’est la vision de Corrêa que Wells preferait. Corrêa et Wells se connaissaient et d’ailleurs la derniere illustration de cette edition de luxe du roman montre les deux hommes ensemble; Wells affirma meme que Corrêa etait celui qui avait su le mieux rendre par l’image son texte.  

Les differentes illustrations de Corrêa montrent des differences entre une machine et l’autre.  Le Tripode de RetrokiT est en quelque sorte une ‘moyenne’ reprenant des elements de plusieurs illustrations; le kit vient avec plusieur pièces optionelles qui permettront au maquettiste de réaliser sa propre 'version' du Tripode.

L’echelle choisie, N-gauge, soit 1/160, permettra l’insertion dans des dioramas ou saynetes contenant des elements de modelisme ferroviere a cette échelle ; toutefois, notre Tripode pourra encore s’associer a des environements plus grands (1/144) ou plus petits : en effet, les descriptions des Tripodes dans le roman sont pauvres en details et selon ce roman, la taille du Tripode est donnee à 'environ trente metres de haut'.  Cela donne à notre kit une hauteur de 20cm.  Par ailleurs, le kit contiendra des éléments 'terriens' originaux pour un diorama au 1/160, y compris une base qui permet la réalisation d'un diorama complet 'out of the box'.
